Park Geun-hye on “Healing Camp”
“얼음공주” 박근혜가 보다 친근한 이미지를 쌓을 수 있을까? 어쨌든 그것이 현재 그녀가 시도하는 바이며 어제(월요일)밤 인기 TV토크쇼에 출연한 것이 오늘 장안의 화제가 되었다.
집권 한나라당(GNP)의 2012년 대선주자이자 지난 달 당이 또 다른 스캔들에 휘말리는 와중에 비상대책위원장직을 맡은 박근혜는 SBS의 “힐링 캠프” 토크쇼에 출연했다.
이 토크쇼의 제목은 게스트가 자신의 과거사에 관해 터놓고 이야기함으로써 자신을 치유한다는 발상에서 나온 것으로, 실제로 이 쇼에 출연한 보수적인 한국인들이 긴장을 풀고 편하게 자신을 보여주는 모습이 종종 목격되곤 한다. 두 명의 코미디언과 한 명의 여배우로 구성된 세 명의 진행자들은 편안한 분위기에서 게스트와 함께 개인사, 커리어, 사회 문제 등에 관해 이야기를 나눈다.
박 위원장과의 대화는 먼저 조촐한 해장국집에서 시작되어 한 집으로 옮겨갔다.
그녀는 프로그램 초반부에 “안해보던 거라 긴장됩니다. 재미 없으면 어떡하나?”라고 말했다.
한 시간 이상의 대화에서 그녀는 자신이 속한 한나라당의 문제와 정치 전반, 자신의 꿈, 심지어 가족에 관해서도 진솔한 대화를 나눴다. 과거 약 20년간 한국을 통치했던 군 장성 출신 대통령의 딸로서 그녀는 항상 스포트라이트 속에서 살아왔다. 그러나 그러한 삶을 살면서도 대중으로부터 유지해 온 약간의 거리감과 신비감은 페이스북과 트위터의 시대인 요즘에는 오히려 단점이 될 수도 있다는 것을 깨닫기 시작했다.
한국은 올해 4월 총선과 12월 대선이라는 두 가지 중요한 정치적 이벤트를 앞두고 있으며, 그런 만큼 정치인들은 유권자들과 만날 수 있는 기회를 노리고 있다. 소셜 네트워킹 서비스 역시 선거에서 필수적인 요소로 자리잡아가고 있다.
물론 박 위원장도 이 점을 잘 알고 있다. 그녀는 “토크쇼 출연제의를 받았을 때 ‘한번 나가볼까.요즘 시대 화두라고 그러면 예를 들면 진정성.또 소통이니까”라고 말했다.
자신의 별명인 “얼음공주”에 대해서도 다음과 같이 항변했다. “그건 제가 항상 매우 심각하고 첨예하게 갈등되는 문제들에 답하는 모습을 보였기 때문이라고 생각해요…그런 질문에 웃으면서 대답할 순 없잖겠어요?”
한나라당의 임시대표로서 그녀는 국민들의 신뢰를 다시 얻기 위해 더 열심히 일할 것이라고 말했다. 당을 위해서 뿐 아니라 정치 시스템 전체를 위해서 말이다.
토크쇼에서 박 위원장은 자신이 평범한 한 인간임을 강조하려 노력했다. 많은 한국인들은 그녀를 그런 식으로 생각하지 않기 때문이다. 특히 나이 든 사람들은 그녀가 대통령 사저에서 자라나는 모습, 어머니 육영수 여사가 1974년 암살당한 후 영부인의 역할을 하던 모습을 보았다.
박 위원장은 노래도 불렀으며, 길거리 음식을 좋아하며, “폭탄주”도 잘 만든다고 말했다. (폭탄주는 여러가지 술을 섞은 것으로 한국의 술꾼들이 퇴근 후 모임에서 즐겨 마신다.) 그녀는 “대학에서 이공계 출신이기 때문에 뭐든 정확하거든요…폭탄주 만들때도 비율을 잘 맞추어야 합니다”라고 농담반 진담반으로 말했다.
그러나 난해한 주제에 대해서는 말을 아꼈다.
안철수(본인은 출마하지 않겠다고 밝혔음에도 언론이 그녀의 잠재적 경쟁자로 내세우는 사업가 겸 교수)에 대해 그녀는 “젊은층에 매우 인기있는 교수”라며 그 이유로 그들과의 소통능력을 들었다. 지난 11월 박 위원장은 안 교수가 한 것 같은 타운홀 스타일 미팅을 가지기 위해 몇몇 대학 캠퍼스에 모습을 나타냈다.
한나라당을 신랄하게 비판하는 유명 팟캐스트 “나는 꼼수다”도 한번 들어본 적이 있다며 더 이상 자세한 설명은 없이 그 프로도 나름의 문제가 있다고만 말했다.
“저는 ‘안거낙업’이란 말을 좋아해요. 근심없이 살면서 생업에 즐겁게 종사한다라는 뜻입니다. 어느 지역에 태어났든 또 어떤 직업을 가졌던, 어떤 학교를 나왔든 자기가 열심히 노력하면 더 잘 살고 행복하게 살 수 있는 그런 나라를 만드는 것이 목표입니다.”
“정치의 목표가 어떻게 어려운 말로 표현하든,어떻게 소박한 말로 표현하든, 이 철학에서 벗어날 수 없다는 거죠.그래서 그런 목표를 향해서 가고 있습니다”
AGB 닐슨미디어리서치에 따르면 이 토크쇼 시청율은 지난주의 5.9%에서 12.2%로 치솟아 월요일 밤 같은 시간대에 방송된 프로그램 중 최고의 시청율을 기록했다.
다음주 “힐링캠프”에는 진보진영의 대선주자로 거론되는 문재인이 출연할 예정이다. 그는 노무현 전 대통령의 비서실장을 지냈으며 대선에 출마한 적은 없지만 최근 부산 지역에서 국회의원 출마결정을 밝힌 바 있다.

Can the “Ice Princess” build up a more friendly image? Park Geun-hye is trying and her appearance on a popular TV talk show last night was the talk of the town today.
Ms. Park, the ruling Grand National Party’s presidential front-runner for 2012 who last month took the GNP chairmanship amid yet another scandal in the party, went on SBS-TV’s “Healing Camp” talk show.
The name of the show comes from the idea that guests heal themselves by talking openly about their past – and the show often succeeds in getting buttoned-up Koreans to unwind. Three hosts – two comedians and one actress – speak with a guest about personal life, career, and social issues in a relaxed atmosphere.
Their talk with Ms. Park started in a humble hangover-soup restaurant and moved to a house.
“I am nervous because this is something very new to me. What if I am boring?” Ms. Park said at the beginning of the program.
For more than an hour, she touched upon the problems of her own party, politics in general, her dreams and even her family. As the daughter of the former general who was South Korea’s military president for nearly two decades, Ms. Park has been in the spotlight her whole life. But she has also been able to maintain a bit of distance and mystique that, she’s now finding, may be a disadvantage in the age of Facebook and Twitter.
South Korea has two important political events this year – general election in April and presidential one in December— and politicians are increasingly seeking chances to meet with voters. Social networking services are also becoming crucial to elections.
Ms. Park was also certainly aware of this. “When I was asked to be on the show, I thought ‘why not?’ Because the subject of conversation nowadays is sincerity and communication,” she said on “Healing Camp.”
She defended her nickname “Ice Princess,” by saying “I think that is because I am always seen answering to very serious, and controversial questions… I can’t answer those questions with a smile, can I?”
As GNP’s interim leader, she said she would work harder to regain people’s trust not only for the party but also for the political system overall.

During the conversation, she tried to be seen as an ordinary person. Many South Koreans find hard to see her that way. Older people saw her grow up in the presidential house and act as First Lady after her mother was assassinated in 1974.
She sang on the program, said she likes street foods, and is good at making “poktanju” or “bomb shot,” which is a mixture of various alcohols that Korea’s heavy drinkers enjoy during after-hours gatherings. “Because I studied engineering in university, I am very accurate in measuring… You need to put right amount of different alcohols,” she said half-jokingly.
But she didn’t go much deeper with a difficult topic.
Regarding Ahn Chul-soo – a businessman the media has touted as a potential rival though he insists he won’t run – Ms. Park called him “a very popular professor with young people” due to his capability to connect with them. In November, she appeared on several college campuses, conducting town hall-style meetings with students as Mr. Ahn has done.
And she said she once listened to the famous podcast “Naneun Ggomsuda,” which is sharply critical of the GNP. She said, “It has some problems too,” without further elaborating.
“I like a word an-geo-nak-up, which means living happily while doing your job. In other words, I hope to make a country where people can live happily if they try hard, regardless of hometown, job, or education,” Ms. Park said.
“The goal of politics can’t be anything other than this…. I am heading toward that goal,” she said.
The program was the most-watched show on Monday night with a 12.2% rating, up from 5.9% last week, the highest among all programs on the same time slot, according to AGB Nielsen Media Research.
Next week, the show hosts Moon Jae-in, another potential presidential wannabe from the liberal camp. Mr. Moon was chief of staff to former President Roh Moo-hyun, has never run for office before but recently decided to run for the National Assembly from a Busan district.
