만약 지금 스물 다섯 청춘이라면 “사물을 고차원적으로 인식하는 칩(센서)을 만들 것”이라고 했다. 사물인터넷(IoT)이 대세라는 예측을 내놓은 셈이다. 훌륭한 엔지니어의 자질에 대해선 “스스로에게 진실하고, 옳지 않은 것을 얘기할 수 있어야 한다. 똑똑해야 한다. 다른 방법은 없는지 많은 생각을 하라”고 답했다. 아이폰6의 화면이 커진 점에 대해선 “애플에는 (작은 화면 크기에 집착하는) ‘잡스의 도그마’가 있어 어떤 임직원도 화면에 대해 얘기하지 못했다”며 “이제 사용자가 더 큰 화면을 요구하고 있다”고 말했다. 강연 내용과 기자 간담회를 문답 형태로 재구성했다.

-당신은 혁신의 아이콘이다.

“평생을 혁신하면서 살았다. 그래서 혁신이 가치관이자 성격이 됐다. 혁신은 학교 밖에 있다. 똑같이 정답을 공부해선 혁신이 나올 수 없다. 내 목표는 다른 사람이 생각하지 않는 방법을 찾는 것이었다. 돈과 재료가 없을 때 더 혁신적이었다. 학력이 낮아도 훌륭한 엔지니어가 된 사람이 많다. 나는 스스로 엔지니어가 아니라 혁신가라고 생각한다. ”

-스티브 잡스는 어떻게 혁신했나.

“잡스가 애플을 만든 게 20대 초반이었다. 성공과 유명인이 되겠다는 확실한 목표가 있었다. 우리가 꽤 돈을 벌었을 때도 잡스는 회사에서 높은 직책이 아니었다. 그래서 그는 자기 생각을 직원에게 알리고 설득하기 위해 일일이 전 직원을 찾아다닐 정도로 열정적이었다. 열정은 혁신의 출발점이다.”

-스타트업은 어떻게 시작해야 하나.

“잡스는 엔지니어가 아니었지만 엔지니어링에 대한 이해가 높았다. 무엇보다 좋은 엔지니어를 식별하는 능력이 탁월했다. 실리콘밸리에서도 투자까지 다 받은 후에 엔지니어를 영입하는 경우가 있다. 그러나 좋은 회사가 되려면 창업 초기부터 엔지니어가 있어야 한다. 문제 해결자 한 명, 좋은 엔지니어 한 명, 시장과 제품을 잘 아는 사람 한 명이 한 팀이 돼야 한다.”

-지도자의 소통도 중요하지 않나.

“하드웨어, 소프트웨어, 테스트 등을 혼자서 다 할수는 없다. 그러나 끈질기게 프로젝트를 추진하며 최종 결정을 할 단 한 사람은 반드시 필요하고, 중요하다. 나한테는 그게 잡스였다.”

-애플은 초기 확장을 어떻게 했나.

“운이 좋았다. 창업 후 초기 10년간 좋은 제품을 많이 만들어 높은 가격에 팔았다. 이후 실패가 있었지만 견딜 수 있었다. 오픈 플랫폼의 힘도 컸다. 사실 우리의 처음 계획은 애플에서 만든 20여개 애플리케이션만 사용하려는 것이었다. 그러나 오픈 플랫폼이 되고, 플랫폼 참여자들이 우리 제품을 먼저 홍보했다. ”

-애플 성공의 비결은 뭔가.

“애플은 제품보다 사용자를 더 생각하는 회사다. 잡스는 컴퓨터 광들이 매달리는 기술을 중심으로 사고하지 않았다. 미래 혁신도 애플이 이끌기 바란다. 단 그 중심은 전자제품이 아닐 수도 있다. 무인자동차일수도 있고, 인공지능 일수도 있다.”

-애플 아이폰6에는 혁신이 없다는 비판도 있다.

“애플 아이폰6의 하드웨어는 기존과 별로 다르지 않을 수 있다. 이제 혁신은 하드웨어가 아닌 소프트웨어에서 일어나야 한다. 우리는 스마트폰을 고를 때 ‘내 친구가 이걸 쓸까’ 등 여러가지를 감안한다. 기능은 그 다음의 문제다. 가장 중요한 것은 일상에서 핵심적인 일을 하는데 문제가 없도록 24시간 잘 돌아가야 한다는 점이다. 모든 부문에서 1등을 할 필요는 없다. 중요한 것은 사람들이 기대하는 것을 할 수 있어야 한다. 지금 애플은 여전히 혁신적이다.”

-정부 등 공공 부문은 무엇을 해야하나

“애플의 열린 플랫폼으로 인해 우버 같은 서비스가 가능했다. 공공 부문은 사람이, 기업이 성공할 수 있는 인큐베이터가 돼야한다. 젊은 사람들이 필요로 하는 자료를 주고, 멘토를 소개해야 한다. 많은 사람이 혁신에 공감은 한다. 그러나 혁신을 하려면 사람을 모으고 장려해야 한다.”

그는 교육의 중요성도 강조했다. “200년간 교육이 바뀌어야 한다고 했지만 별로 바뀐게 없다. 컴퓨터가 보급된 후에도 별로 달라진 게 없다. 학생은 유권자가 아니기 때문에 정부 지원이 표가 많은 쪽으로만 간다”고 꼬집었다. 그래서인지 해법은 급진적이었다. “교실의 크기가 중요하다. 교사 한 명에 학생 30명 형태로는 절대 안 된다. 교사 대 학생 수가 1대 1이어야 한다.”

-인간이 로봇의 애완동물이 될 것이란 얘기도 했는데.

“우리가 강아지를 키우면 여러가지 힘든 일을 강아지를 위해서 한다. 이처럼 기계가 우리를 보살펴주는 단계가 올 것으로 본다. 그러나 인간은 인간의 뇌를 완벽하게 이해할 수 없고, 인간처럼 로봇이 사고하는 시대는 불가능하다. 인공 지능은 인류에게 폐해를 줄 수도 있지만 낙관적으로 보려 한다. 또 모든 일자리를 기계가 대체할 순 없을 것이다.”

-성공을 위한 조언도 해달라.

“성공해서 돈 벌려고 한 적 없다. 즐기려고 했다. 행복한가가 매우 중요하다. ‘H(Happy)=S(Smile)-A(Angry)’라는 공식이 있다. 행복은 웃는 것에서 찡그린 것을 뺀 것이다.”

이날 포럼은 비무장지대(DMZ)를 ‘드림 메이킹 존(DMZ)’으로 만들자는 취지에서 열렸다. 워즈니악은 “냉전 시대에 미국과 옛 소련 시민이 영상으로 서로 얘기하는 프로젝트를 도운 적이 있었다. 디지털 격차를 줄이는 것도 중요하다. 각종 금수조치를 없애고, 북한도 인터넷에 대한 제약을 풀어야 한다”고 말했다.

Best iPad 3 cases and covers (photos)

A few notes. First, some of the cases in the roundup won’t be available right away (several are due to ship at the end of March). Second, the majority of iPad cases shown here are compatible with the iPad 2 (the iPad 2 is a millimeter or so thinner). And finally, while Apple’s Smart Coveralso works just fine with the new iPad, I haven’t included any back-only covers that are designed to be paired with the Smart Cover. Several companies, including Speck, Belkin, and Incipio, make nice, slim back-only covers, and they’re all fairly similar. My suggestion: get one that has a piece of metal on the back so the Smart Cover magnetically adheres to it when you have it folded back from the screen.

Of course, this roundup only represents a fraction of the cases available for the new iPad, and we expect dozens of new cases to arrive in the months to come. MediaDevil’s Easyscreen is a bubble-free screen protector that comes in multiple colors and can give your iPad a new look.

The new iPad‘s glass screen is tough and scratch-resistant, but a lot of people still choose to buy a screen protector to be safe and potentially help cut down on glare.

The truth is, I don’t know how necessary screen protectors really are and many don’t help with glare quite as much as they promise. They also have a tendency to reduce the crispness you see in the iPad’s new Retina display, which is probably their biggest flaw (this wasn’t as much of an issue with the iPad 2).

That last serious caveat aside, some screen protectors are better than others and only a few are really worth your consideration.

I’m personally a fan of bubble-free screen protectors and have used a Moshi iVisor for the last year on an iPad 2. These types of screen protectors are easy to put on, look nice, don’t require a challenging “application process,” and don’t affect the touch sensitivity of the screen.
